Ragweed Allergy
Ragweed allergy is a seasonal allergic condition caused by the body's hypersensitivity to ragweed pollen. It is one of the most aggressive allergens and often causes severe allergic reactions during the flowering season, which typically lasts from late July through October. The condition can significantly reduce quality of life and is often mistaken for a common cold or viral infection.
Causes of Ragweed Allergy
The main cause of the allergy is ragweed pollen entering the body through the respiratory tract.
- The pollen is easily carried by the wind over long distances and reaches high concentrations in the air during dry and windy weather.
- Risk factors include a genetic predisposition to allergies, a weakened immune system, the presence of other allergies or bronchial asthma, and spending extended periods outdoors during the flowering season.
How the Body Reacts to Ragweed Pollen
When ragweed pollen lands on the mucous membranes of the respiratory tract and eyes, the immune system mistakenly identifies it as a harmful agent. In response, it triggers the production of specific IgE antibodies, leading to the release of histamine and other inflammatory mediators.
This causes swelling of the mucous membranes, increased mucus production, itching, and irritation. The nose, eyes, throat, and bronchi are most commonly affected. In people with asthma, it can trigger flare-ups and breathing difficulties.
Diagnosis of Ragweed Allergy
Diagnosis is based on an analysis of the patient’s complaints, the seasonality of symptoms, and allergy test results. A doctor may perform skin prick tests to determine the body’s reaction to the specific allergen.
Laboratory diagnostics are also used to measure the level of specific IgE antibodies in the blood. These methods allow for an accurate determination of the cause of the allergic reaction and help distinguish it from other illnesses.
Treatment of Ragweed Allergy
- Treatment aims to reduce symptoms and control the immune response. Antihistamines are used to alleviate itching, sneezing, and watery eyes.
- For severe nasal congestion, anti-inflammatory nasal sprays may be prescribed.
- Allergen-specific immunotherapy (ASIT) is often recommended, as it helps gradually reduce the body’s sensitivity to ragweed pollen. The treatment plan is tailored individually by a doctor based on the patient’s condition.
Is Prevention Possible?
Preventing ragweed allergy involves minimizing contact with the allergen during the flowering period. It is recommended to limit time outdoors in dry and windy weather, keep windows closed, use air purifiers, and perform regular wet cleaning at home.
After coming indoors, it is advisable to wash your face and hands and change your clothes. If symptoms appear, it is important to consult a doctor promptly to adjust treatment and prevent complications.
