Mold Allergy
Mold allergy is an immune system reaction to mold spores that spread through the air and easily enter the body via the respiratory tract. Due to their microscopic size, they penetrate the respiratory system unhindered and can cause various symptoms – ranging from mild discomfort to pronounced allergic reactions.
Why Mold Allergy Occurs
Mold actively develops in moist environments, which is why it often appears both outdoors and indoors. It can be found under the sink, in the bathroom, on walls, ceilings, in washing machines, basements, or even in the soil of indoor plants. Mold allergy is a fairly common condition that requires attention, as constant contact with the allergen can worsen well-being and quality of life.
- The primary cause of the allergy is fungal spores, which are present almost everywhere in the environment. They are constantly in the air and, when inhaled, can trigger an immune response.
- People with pre-existing allergic diseases, particularly bronchial asthma, as well as those with weakened immune systems, are most susceptible to the allergy.
- The risk group also includes people with a genetic predisposition to allergies, residents of humid regions, those living in premises with high humidity, or those working in conditions of constant contact with moisture.
The living environment plays a vital role – the more moisture and poor ventilation there is, the higher the risk of developing an allergy.
Symptoms
Symptoms of mold allergy can be similar in both adults and children and are most often associated with the involvement of the respiratory system and mucous membranes.
The main manifestations include:
Symptoms
Nasal congestion and discharge
Frequent sneezing and itchy nose
Watery eyes and redness of the eyes
Cough and a feeling of shortness of breath
Skin rashes and itching
General weakness and headache
If a person has asthma, symptoms may be more pronounced and can even provoke flare-ups or attacks. Inflammation of the sinus mucosa or intensified migraines may also occur.
A characteristic feature is the worsening of symptoms in damp rooms or after contact with mold.
Characteristics of Mold Sensitivity
Mold allergy belongs to the category of inhalant allergies, meaning those that occur when breathing in allergens. Its specific feature is that contact with the allergen can happen both outdoors and at home, which complicates disease control.
- Mold can be seasonal, especially during the autumn period when ideal conditions for its growth are created, but it often has a year-round character due to its presence in residential premises.
- It is also important to consider that different types of mold fungi can cause varying intensities of reaction, so the course of the disease may differ for each person.
How to Know It Is a Mold Allergy
To confirm the diagnosis, a doctor assesses the symptoms, their duration, and their connection to environmental conditions. It is important to notice if the condition worsens in damp rooms or after contact with potential sources of mold.
Medical history is also taken into account – the presence of other allergies, asthma, living conditions, and lifestyle.
To clarify the cause, laboratory tests or allergy tests may be conducted to determine sensitivity to specific fungi.
Diagnosis
Diagnosis is performed by an allergist based on a comprehensive assessment of the patient’s condition. It includes symptom analysis, collecting medical history, and conducting special studies.
The main methods are blood tests for specific antibodies and skin tests. Skin prick tests are used to determine reactions to specific types of mold. However, laboratory tests are often more informative than standard skin tests.
The choice of diagnostic method always depends on the clinical situation. A comprehensive approach allows for the accurate identification of the cause of the allergy and the selection of the correct treatment strategy.
Treatment of Mold Allergy
- Treatment for mold allergy is aimed at reducing symptoms and preventing flare-ups.
- The basis of symptomatic therapy consists of antihistamines, which help control allergy manifestations. Intranasal steroids and saline solutions may also be used to reduce inflammation and cleanse the mucous membranes.
- In some cases, a doctor may recommend allergen-specific immunotherapy (ASIT) – a method that allows the body to increase its tolerance to the allergen.
- An important part of treatment is avoiding contact with mold, as without this, even drug therapy will be less effective.
Prevention
Prevention plays a key role in disease control and helps significantly reduce the impact of the allergen on the body.
Key recommendations:
❀ maintain indoor humidity levels between 30-50%;
❀ regularly ventilate rooms;
❀ use exhaust fans in the kitchen and bathroom;
❀ perform wet cleaning;
❀ use dehumidifiers;
❀ use anti-mold agents in the bathroom;
❀ eliminate sources of leaks and moisture;
❀ regularly clean: air conditioners, humidifiers, refrigerators (seals);
❀ avoid walking in damp weather (especially in autumn) and staying near fallen leaves or compost.
Additionally, it is recommended not to dry laundry inside the apartment and not to store old books or clothing in damp places.
Mold allergy requires timely diagnosis and a proper approach to treatment. Environmental control and following medical recommendations allow for a significant reduction in symptoms and an improvement in the quality of life.
