Cold allergy, also known as cold urticaria, is an immune system reaction to a drop in air temperature or skin contact with cold objects. It occurs upon exposure to low temperatures and can manifest as itching, redness, blisters, or skin swelling. Some individuals may have a more severe reaction accompanied by general malaise. This type of allergy is not merely a physical sensitivity to cold but rather the result of an immune response to temperature-induced stress.
Causes of Cold Allergic Reactions
The primary cause of a cold allergy is the immune system’s hypersensitivity to temperature changes.
- When exposed to cold, the body reacts similarly to how it would to allergenic proteins, leading to the activation of immune cells and the release of inflammatory mediators.
- Genetic predisposition, the presence of other allergic diseases, metabolic disorders, and a weakened immune system can all play a role.
- The reaction may occur after a sudden move from a warm room to cold air, while swimming in cold water, or after skin contact with cold surfaces.
How Cold Allergy Develops
The mechanism of cold allergy development is linked to the activation of the immune system under the influence of low temperatures. Contact with the cold alters the movement speed of cell membranes and proteins, which can stimulate immune cells to release histamine and other inflammatory mediators.
This leads to local vasodilation (widening of blood vessels), fluid leaking into surrounding tissues, and the appearance of allergy signs on the skin. Exposed areas such as the face, hands, or lips, which come into direct contact with the cold, are most commonly affected.
Diagnosis of Cold Allergy
Diagnosis begins with a thorough medical history and a detailed description of the patient’s symptoms. The doctor will ask about the circumstances under which the reaction appeared, the nature of the cold exposure, and the duration and frequency of symptoms.
A cold provocation test is often performed, where a patch of skin is cooled under specialist supervision to evaluate the body’s response.
In some cases, laboratory tests are used to rule out other causes of rashes, swelling, or skin irritation. Proper diagnosis helps distinguish a cold allergy from other conditions with similar symptoms.
Treatment of Cold Allergy
- The goal of treatment is to eliminate the reaction and protect the body from low temperatures. The first step is to avoid trigger situations, such as prolonged exposure to the cold, sudden temperature changes, swimming in cold water, or contact with cold surfaces.
- To reduce symptoms, antihistamines may be used to alleviate itching and swelling. In severe cases, a doctor may prescribe corticosteroids or other medications to control the inflammatory process.
- It is also important to keep the skin hydrated and protected with emollients to reduce irritation and strengthen the skin’s barrier function.
Prevention of Cold Allergic Reactions
Prevention involves avoiding contact with low temperatures and strengthening the immune system. It is recommended to avoid sudden temperature shifts, dress according to the weather, and protect exposed body parts with layered clothing and warm gloves.
After being in the cold, it is important to return to a warm environment quickly and safely. Regular cold hardening (tempering) under professional supervision may help the body adapt better to temperature changes.
Individuals prone to cold allergies should discuss the possibility of taking preventive antihistamines before cold exposure with their doctor. If symptoms occur frequently or become more pronounced, it is necessary to consult an allergist to adjust the treatment and prevention plan.
